We have already built up support for the
project with local schools, youth groups and clubs and anticipate their
involvement in the management of the Spinney. By
getting the support of the Wildlife Trust and other organisations we hope
to be able to support this education by identifying features of interest in the
Spinney through information boards and leaflets.
Children can then be encouraged to protect wildlife and learn how to help
it flourish. By
teaching the children about the Spinney (both formally and at home), it is hoped
that we are sowing the seeds to protect our environment for future generations.

Local schools Sunnyside Primary
and All Saints Primary have in the past been unable to use the Spinney for field
trips and nature projects in recent years because of inaccessibility and
concerns about the type of vandalism present there.
Following the voluntary work of local residents who have spent time
clearing up the area, the school are keen to make use of the Spinney once again
as an area of interest for pupils in terms of nature, history and conservation
as well as the benefits of extending the outdoor curriculum and promoting
physical activity.

The
school have identified the following opportunities provided by the Spinney as a
pocket park within their community:
Numeracy - data collection – who uses the area, how many trees of different
types etc.
History - Primary evidence of developing local history.
Citizenship - Community project supported by the school.
Respect and care of community for benefit of all.
Geography - Conservation
area and awareness of land use Awareness
of area and characteristics of soil, rock etc.
Science - Range of habitats in the area.
Range of animals, plants, birds, insects for study and observation.
Art – Observational work.
Literacy – Stimulus of creative work.
An overall opportunity for the observation and development of the local area
around the school itself and within the pupils’ local environment.
The Spinney provides a living, working outdoor classroom.
