"It was amazing
to see the little chicks being fed in the bat boxes by their mother, she was
flying backwards and forwards putting food in their mouths. We were glued to
the spot watching them being fed for a good 15-20 minutes. The children have
never seen that before and they were so excited and full of it afterwards
telling their dad what they had seen."

“We moved into the area 6 months ago and I
found out about the Obelisk Spinney Pocket Park through the internet. It was
a way to get involved with the natural world even though I didn’t have any
knowledge or experience."

"My first work party involved pruning trees and planting wild flowers. By
the end I was tired but felt a great sense of achievement and satisfaction.
Since then I have helped make paths, remove fallen trees, planted new trees
and collected litter. It’s a real privilege to help care for this ancient
woodland and to see it thrive.”

"I've
seen the woodpeckers nesting in the trees this spring, one of the newly
erected bat boxes was also being used by birds nesting."

"We went for a walk the other night with the children,
it was a bit dusky and we went into the woods, the youngest was a bit scared
but it was a bit of fun. We were listening out to count how many different
sounds we could hear and then we heard a couple of owls calling. The kids
thought it was great, and so did we, that was the first time they had heard
owls calling and even though we couldn't see them they felt really close."

“Taking part in the
work parties is a great way to get involved with nature and have a positive
impact on your local environment. It’s also good fun. The fact that we are
looking after the area has meant that others now take more pride in it too.
An increase in the number of people, particularly families, using the woods
is testimony to the improvements that have been made in the last few years.
It feels safer and has a huge variety of wildlife to see right on the
doorstep. I would encourage more people to get involved.”

"More people are
using the Spinney now, many more dog walkers. It's a nicer place to
walk and we will be able to use it in winter with the paths laid down -
before it always got too boggy. There's a lot less litter and it makes
a nice walk linking in with the Boughton Pocket Park. Keep up the good
work"

"Isn't it beautiful, hear those sounds; I really think
there are greater variety of birds in here than previous years as you can
hear a greater variety of bird sounds"

"The tree work that you've done has opened up the
canopy allowing the light in to the spinney which will allow some of the
ground flora grow and we might get a few wild flowers growing in here"

"It seems a much
friendlier place somehow, now that the paths have been completed"

The paths are looking really good"

"I love walking through here with my dog - the
new paths will make it better under foot especially in winter. Sometimes
in winter you just can't use it as it gets too boggy. When are you going to
lay more paths down?"

"It's good to see people look after this lovely
woodland, you are doing a good job. I might even come along to one of your
work days and give a hand."

"I haven't walked through here for years, last time I
come through here it was a mess and really made you feel uncomfortable, but
this has changed and is really beautiful. I will walk here more regularly
now."

"It must be 10 years since I walked through the
Spinney. It used to be so dark and damp and full of rubbish that it
wasn't a nice place to walk. Now it's much lighter and more pleasant. I'm amazed at the difference that the paths have made"
